Pregnancy week 18

This week your baby is about the size of a bell pepper — around 14.2 cm and 190 g.

Your baby this week

Your baby is more active this week, yawning, stretching, and moving hands and feet freely inside the womb. Unique fingerprints are forming, and a protective coating called myelin is beginning to develop around the nerves to help signals travel faster. If you're expecting a girl, her uterus and fallopian tubes are settling into place; if a boy, his genitals are becoming more defined. The ears are also moving into their final position on the sides of the head.

Your body this week

You may soon feel your baby's first gentle kicks, often like a light flutter in your belly. It's also common to feel dizzy at times as your circulation changes, so rise slowly from sitting or lying down. You might notice mild swelling in your feet toward the end of the day.

Tips for this week

This week may include your detailed anatomy ultrasound, a lovely chance to see your baby, so enjoy it. Drink plenty of water throughout the day to stay energized and reduce swelling. If dizziness happens often or feels severe, let your healthcare provider know.
