Pregnancy week 17

This week your baby is about the size of a pear — around 13 cm and 140 g.

Your baby this week

This week your baby begins building brown fat, a special tissue that will help regulate body temperature after birth. The cartilage that formed the skeleton is slowly hardening into bone, and movements are becoming more coordinated. The umbilical cord is growing stronger and thicker to carry nutrients and oxygen efficiently. Your little one may also be starting to pick up sounds from the world around them.

Your body this week

You may notice some aches in your lower back or pelvis as your uterus grows and your center of gravity shifts. It's also common to feel hungrier and more energetic than during the first months. Hormonal changes may bring skin changes, such as darkening of certain areas.

Tips for this week

Choose comfortable, low-heeled shoes to support your balance and ease pressure on your back. Try sleeping on your side with a pillow between your knees for extra comfort. And remember that every pregnancy is different, so never hesitate to check in with your doctor or midwife about any concern.
