Slugging

A nighttime step where you seal your routine with a thin layer of an occlusive balm like petroleum jelly to lock moisture in until morning.

Slugging is inspired by Korean skincare, and its playful name nods to the gentle, glossy sheen it leaves behind. The idea is simple: after moisturizing, you apply a thin layer of an occlusive like petroleum jelly to stop water from evaporating overnight.

This approach suits very dry or compromised skin, especially after cold weather or air conditioning, and it goes on as the final step over a water-based moisturizer. But be mindful: if your skin is oily or acne-prone, it can clog pores, so try it only on certain areas or on cold nights. Use it when needed, not every single night.
