Pregnancy week 9

This week your baby is about the size of cherry — around 2.3 cm and 2 g.

Your baby this week

At week 9 your baby is about the size of a cherry and is moving from the embryo stage toward becoming a fetus. The basic facial features — eyes, nose and lips — are taking shape, and the tiny limb buds are developing into arms and legs with the beginnings of fingers and toes. That fast little heartbeat can sometimes be seen on an ultrasound now. Vital internal organs are also developing at a remarkable pace.

Your body this week

This week you may feel tired and queasy, with tender breasts — common symptoms driven by rising hormones. Every pregnancy is different, and some mothers notice very little, which is perfectly normal too. Do reach out to your doctor if nausea becomes severe or keeps you from eating and drinking.

Tips for this week

Try small, frequent meals to ease nausea, and sip water throughout the day. Rest as much as you can and listen to your body — feeling tired now is completely expected. If you haven't already, talk with your doctor about the supplements that are right for you, such as folic acid.
