Second trimester

Pregnancy week 27

This week your baby is about the size of cauliflower — around 36.6 cm and 875 g.

Your baby this week

As the second trimester draws to a close, your baby is about the size of a cauliflower, and the brain is growing quickly, developing its folds and grooves. Your baby may start to hiccup in the womb, which you might feel as small, rhythmic pulses in your belly. The lungs are maturing further, and your baby can now open and close their eyes and respond to light that filters into the womb.

Your body this week

You may feel more tired or heavy as the second trimester ends, and perhaps some leg cramps, especially at night. Mild breathlessness during activity is also common, and all of these changes are a natural part of your journey.

Tips for this week

Gently stretch your legs and flex your ankles before bed to ease cramps, and keep up with hydration and a variety of nourishing foods. Take short breaks through the day and try not to overexert yourself. This is a lovely time to start thinking about your birth plan and discussing it with your doctor or midwife.
